Personal Safety Plan: Neccessary?
People always ask, "Why a plan? Why not just
teach people how to defend themselves like other self defense classes?"

The short answer? Because most self defense classes don't take into account the mental and physical changes you go thru, the legalities you have to face when you go to court, short or long term effects on you after the situation, verbal diffusion skills that may avoid a physical escalation, and in some cases, don't provide you with resisting opponents.

Did I mention, PREVENTION in the first place? While some would argue the aforementioned things are not important, or take too long to learn, or people aren't going to be interested in all that, the first thing you should ask yourself is, am I prepared to handle those things? If you can't say yes, then there is your answer. Because at some point, it will be a concern. All you need to do is read the paper, listen to radio orTV newscasts, or speak to victims of crimes, as we have, to hear how their lives have been affected.

Roy Barnett and the people who work with him have all been victims, as well as researching the statistics you don't have time to look into. PPT has done that for you, and put it together in an informative and (sometimes) fun learning program. Make no mistake, PPT takes this very seriously, and you should want to as well. Want more proof? Read PPT's article on "Why it's Important to know WHEN to ACT".

In the meantime, look at these Plan Basics:

  • Awareness and Observation: Prevention of bad
situations is much better than having to run or fight your way out of one. Being aware of your surroundings, observing odd behaviour in people, listening to your instincts ("gut feeling"), makes a difference.
  • What does the LAW allow: Criminals have been
able to get off at times because of smart attorneys, or lack of evidence, or because the victim "overreacted" according to the"letter of the law", in the use of defensive force.
  • Knowing what it is your facing: Did you know there are different types of Rape and Rapists? How about what constitutes Stalking or Domestic Violence? Burglar Tactics? How Carjackers operate? What about Identity Theft?
  • Prevention and Offensive-Defensive Tools:
What are they and how are they used; Car Alarms, Burglar Alarms, Pepper Spray, Fire Escape Ladders, Physical Techniques that don't require "Fine Motor" skills and are appropriate for you as an INDIVIDUAL to execute.
  • Exercise and Nutrition: In other words, are you healthy? If you need to RUN, can you? Are you exercising your body, AND mind? Are you getting the nutrition to keep your mind sharp to be aware and observe, and give your body energy to climb out a window to escape, or fight off someone?

Planning for the possibility of a fire should be a part of the plan as well. The obvious reason is the danger of fire, but, ARSON is also a crime, and has been used to COVER UP OTHER CRIMES like ASSAULT or BURGLARY.

So, take time to think about whether you're prepared, then call PPT to make sure you are!
